Growing up I never knew how big of a deal it was to have the Smoky Mountains right in our backyard. As an adult, I appreciate the beauty all around. The beauty of being able to visit whenever we want to, and just the pure beauty that is the Smoky Mountains.
A few weeks ago, Tyler and I had the opportunity to take Blair on her very first vacation. Since it was her first time, we decided a weekend getaway to Pigeon Forge was the perfect spot. I wanted to give you guys a recap, and my recommendations for the Pigeon Forge area in case you are thinking of traveling here soon, or for your own staycation!
Places to Stay:
Margaritaville Island Hotel– We were graciously gifted the opportunity to stay here. This is our second time staying there and we have NOTHING but great things to say about them. The rooms are spacious, the views are amazing, and the location is perfect. Everything you need is on site, or within walking distance. I plan to do a full recap of just the hotel in the next couple weeks. So stay tuned for that.
The Inn at Christmas Place– We have not personally stayed at this property, but have friends that have. They say it is amazing! If you LOVE Christmas decor, this is the place for you!
Places to eat:
Mama’s Farmhouse– Holy smokes. We ate breakfast here on our last day “in” Pigeon Forge. If you like a good ole’ country breakfast– that is all you can eat– this is your place! So. Much. Food. They brought out biscuits, gravy, waffles, sausage, eggs, and so much more. They even have chocolate gravy! The staff was so friendly and got us everything we needed! We can 100% say we loved the experience here.
Big Daddy’s Pizzeria – Located right on the strip, this is an easy stop for lunch. They have wood fired, brick oven pizzas. Our favorite part was definitely the cheesy garlic bread. I felt like I was in cheesy garlic heaven! We had a 14” half “The Carnivore” and half “Big Kahuna” and that was more than enough food for Tyler and myself.
The Timberwood Grill – Both times we have stayed at Margaritaville, this has been a go-to for us. Tyler LOVES the ribs there. I had the BlackJack Salmon this time, and I left full and happy! This is a great dinner spot with a bonus if you sit on the patio. You can see all that is going on in The Island!
The Local Goat – This is a MUST. I am not kidding, If you go at conventional lunch and dinner times, expect a wait. I am here to tell you it is worth it. I have tried multiple things here, and never been disappointed.
Johnny Carino’s – If you love Italian food, here is your place. It was Tyler’s first time eating here, and he really liked it! I will be honest, my favorite part is the bread and spices they bring out at the beginning. I could eat my weight in that.
Things to do:
Alcatraz East Crime Museum– This is hands down my favorite thing to do in Pigeon Forge. I have been twice now and could go back a hundred more times. Two of my favorite parts are the Ted Bundy exhibit, and the reading on Lizzie Bordon. I am a true crime junkie. I have been obsessed with it since I was old enough to understand the JonBenet Ramsey case, which is mentioned there as well. If you are the least bit interested in crime, go here.
Crave Golf Club– You can find minigolf on every corner in the area, but Crave is one of my favorites. They have indoor and outdoor courses, escape rooms, mini bowling, and even a sweet shop. Needless to say, you have a ton of options.
WonderWorks– This interactive attraction includes fun for all ages. Literally. Tyler had fun, and Blair loved the sand and bubbles. I would say it is directed towards bigger kids (Yes, Tyler is still a big kid), but B was fine! If you like simulators, and mind boggling activities, this is your place.
Hollywood Wax Museum– King King is hanging off of the building so there is no missing this. They have exhibits from almost any famous movie you can think of, musicians, you name it. Michael Jackson was my favorite. The horror section was a close second.
The Island– I had to mention The Island because it’s kind of a one stop shop. Literally. Places to stay, eat, shop, and activities. The Great Smoky Mountain Wheel is really neat. Ride it during the day for amazing mountain views, or at night to see all the lights of the area. They have a ropes course for your big kids (again, Tyler loved this) and a carousel and train ride for your smaller kids. They often have live music in the warmer months and a fountain show every hour!
This is just a few highlights of the things you can do and see in the Pigeon Forge area for a staycation. Or even just a day visit! There are so many more, that this post would literally be like 100 pages long. If you have never been, my family can 100% recommend it! Have you been to Pigeon Forge? What are some of your favorite things to do? Let me know in the comments!

Absolutely agree with you on Big Daddy’s Pizzeria and The Local Goat. We will have to try the others when my family comes in next time. Great reviews!
My sister and I still are trying to get to Alcatraz. Both crazy fans of crime! 😂
